If I’m being completely honest, the only thing that persuaded me to read Wonder Woman: Warbringer was the fact that it’s written by my favourite author. Not because it’s about a DC icon (team Marvel!) or because of the recent movie hype (which I honestly couldn’t care less about.) Hence, I know little to nothing about the origins of Wonder Woman and can’t comment on how good this take on the well-known superhero is. However, I can confirm that this book is just as good as you think it is, if not even better.

I was slightly nervous reading something that wasn’t set in the Grishaverse but, for those who are also new to Wonder Woman, the world-building was just as great and the characters, as can be expected, were everything. I love love love books that are solely driven and empowered by women and this book definitely delivered on that. Diana is a kickass protagonist, and Alia is a force to not be reckoned with. Not to mention, Nim! The friendship and banter between all the characters during their little road trip was to die for. There were so many laugh out loud moments that I honestly wish this was more than a standalone because I really want to see these characters again.

The plot itself was fast-paced and there were some heart-wrenching twists (why must characters always let me down with betrayal!?) as well as that beautiful ending you’ve come to expect from Bardugo. I loved the integration of mythology as well as the balance between a fantasy and contemporary world. Come to think of it, there isn’t much I didn’t love. Perhaps the length? It could have been a couple of pages (or books!) longer. Just a suggestion.

Overall, this is an empowering read full of diverse characters, action, humour and feminism! Whilst there are plenty of books out there with strong female protagonists, Wonder Woman: Warbringer is sure to stand out from the crowd. You’ll understand what I mean when you read it. I hope everyone who felt inspired by the movie will pick up this book and enjoy seeing Diana kick ass (literally, per tradition) as much as I did.
